It is not If, but When: Community Emergency Preparedness for Seniors and Persons Living With Disabilities

September 19, 2008 from 9:00 – 4:00
Salem Waterfront Hotel and Suites
Salem, MA

Emergency Preparedness Planners, First Responders, Seniors, Persons Living with Disabilities, Social Services Staff, Municipal and State Government Leaders are invited to come together to share what we do well during local emergencies and begin to collaborate on how we can be better prepared when the next emergency occurs.

Key Commonwealth of Massachusetts Leaders including Secretary of Public Safety Kevin M. Burke, Mass. Office of Disability Director Myra Berloff, and Michael Philbin, MEMA will discuss current state of the state in emergency planning and prepared for seniors, citizens with disabilities and others requesting additional assistance. Those who responded to and were affected by the Danvers explosion and the Gloucester fire will share their insights. Jonathan O’Dell, Mass Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing will provide a luncheon keynote on how one who is deaf needs to be assisted during an emergency. Workshops by experts from National Fire Prevention Assn as well as Disaster Medical Reserve will also be highlighted along with a chance to familiarize yourself with some of the evacuation and emergency equipment from local emergency response teams and suppliers. The goal at the days end is to develop a plan for all who attend to collaborate in making things work more smoothly and effectively across our communities for the next emergency.
