Yes, another year is coming to a close and we will all be putting 2016 on everything in a few days, so please do not forget to put up that new calendar, and use the right year on your checks, letters, appointments, etc!
ILCNSCA looks forward to the next advances for civil rights and disability rights as we end our 25 year anniversary of the Americans Disability Act and move to the next decade of advocacy and inclusion for all living with disabilities. We had a productive year in 2015 and look forward to upcoming events scheduled for 2016:
2016 is an election year so all need to register to vote by February 10, 2016 in the MA primary and prepare their choices for candidates in the primary election, March 1, 2016. ILCNSCA will assist you to register on line before February 10, 2016 if you choose, so give us a call to set up time to come in. Or you can go on line yourself at https://www.sec.state.ma.us/ovr/ The Presidential election will be on November 8, 2016, so please, register to vote as this is what independent living and being an American is all about…having your voice heard!
Our legislative breakfast will be on Friday May 6, 2016 with our partner, Greater North Shore Link (formerly known as the Aging and Disability Resource Consortium of the Greater North Shore). It will be again at the Salem Waterfront Hotel and Marina, Pickering Wharf, Salem. So please, reserve that date!
Our Community Access Advocacy Team (CAAT) and All People Accessible Business Project will continue to address community accessibility and rights issues, so please think about becoming a part of those as an ILCNSCA volunteer, contact Shawn McDuff, Deputy Director, to share your talents and energy with us.
We are looking to have some interesting Pizza and Movie events in 2016, one in late January and one in April. Check out our web page for information on those…The 100 Year Old Man in January, and the Rocky Horror Picture Show in April.
We are planning our close to Valentine’s day lunch at Fantasy Island again, and trying to obtain some Bruins tickets and Red Sox tickets. Sorry we cannot afford Patriots tickets or Super Bowl tickets…anyone want to donate some for us, let us know.
Housing Rights and How to find affordable, accessible, available housing in Salem workshops are in process of being scheduled. As many know, housing rights for those of us living with disabilities are being violated consistently via the information our consumers are sharing with us, and hopefully the MA Legislature in early 2016 will pass the Anti-Bullying of Seniors and People living with Disabilities in subsidized housing Commission legislation that Senator Joan Lovely along with Representatives Brad Hill and Paul Tucker have been working with the Anti-Bullying Coalition to have passed.
We at ILCNSCA are finalizing our updated Yellow Pages which will be mailed out and put up on our web site in early 2016 as an assist to all looking for local resources to meet their services and support needs.
Our Options Counseling Program is there for any who looking for assistance with decision support to insure that they know their alternatives to nursing home placement, so give us a call for that service if you think you or a family member would like to work with us or our Greater North Shore Link partners of Greater Lynn Senior Services, North Shore Elder Services, and SeniorCare. Please know we are here for you!
Happy New Year 2016 from ILCNSCA and we will be open at 9 AM on Monday January 4, 2016 after closing at 1:00 PM on December 31, 2015. Together our voices are loud and heard. MM
